The good news is that you can change all of that. If you are tired of being overweight and are ready to make a change then do it! No waiting until next week to get started or after this weekend's big bbq, DO IT TODAY! Decide to change your life for the better and you will be surprised at how many people will follow you. Not sure where or how to start? Let me give you some tips to get the ball rolling.
1. Get yourself a weight loss plan. Weight loss is so much easier when a plan is in place. Such as the meals you can eat, the days of the week your workouts are scheduled etc. If you don't feel that you are capable of forming your own weight loss plan, set up a meeting with a personal trainer and let them help you. That's what they are there for.
2. In the beginning, I like to suggest that you only have one or two serious workout sessions per week. What I mean by serious workouts, is hard aerobic activity for 30 to 45 minutes. Only doing this once or twice a week for a week or two will help to get you accustomed to the movements and help your sore muscles to recover before the next session. On days that you are not planning on doing a hard workout session I recommend doing some fun weight loss activities such as swimming with the kids or playing tennis or anything that gets you moving around.
3. Set some goals. You probably already have some long term goals such as the weight loss in terms of pounds that you wish to lose or the dress/pants size you want to be able to wear again. You also need to set some short term goals, little milestones that will help to keep you motivated along the way.
4. Get a journal. Document your weight loss progress, trust me after a few weeks your determination will begin to fade and what better time to pull out your trusty journal and read just where you started at and how far you have come. It will do wonders for keeping you motivated and to press on.
5. Hold yourself responsible. Don't cheat on your diet, don't skip workouts. Don't let yourself become content with not accomplishing your goals. Your weight loss and overall health should be the number 1 priority. Don't let anything or anyone get in the way.
6. Quality over quantity. Learn the correct way to perform exercises especially when resistance training. This can save you lots of time in the gym not to mention keeping you injury free. Proper form will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the exercise insuring maximum weight loss with minimum time spent in the gym.
7. Eat to lose weight. You read it right you need to eat 4-6 times everyday. This will keep your metabolism running in high gear. Just keep in mind that you are eating to live and not living to eat, so keep your meals lean and healthy and make sure your portions are no larger than the palm of your hand. Weight loss is 80% diet, eating right and eating frequently is the most important thing you can do to lose weight.
8. Drink water. Leave the sodas, beer, coffee and tea for someone else. Drink water all day long. It will help keep all of your bodily functions working properly. Water will also help to keep you feeling full after you eat for longer periods of time.
9. Increase your lean muscle mass. Throw some resistance training in with you cardio workouts. Every pound of muscle you build will burn approximately 50 more calories a day even when you are not working out.
10. If you are still having trouble talk to a professional. This could be a personal trainer, a nutritionist or even the family doctor. If you had a plumbing problem at home you would call a plumber, so why not talk to someone that is experienced in weight loss to help you achieve your goals?
There you go, ten things that you can start doing right now and get those pounds coming off. There is no secret to weight loss, just take a common sense approach. Eat right, exercise and live well.
